Here are a few tips for respecting the Khmer culture during your visit:

 Cambodian Monks

  •  Offer and receive items with your right hand only.  The left hand is considered unclean.
  • As in most of Asia, it is impolite to talk loudly or show anger. Speak politely and you will find Cambodians will do the same.
  • Wear nice clothes when visiting Wats. Remove hats inside temple grounds, take off shoes and sunglasses when entering places of worship.  Shorts are not considered appropriate attire.
  •  Monks are granted the highest respect in the Khmer culture.  You will see monks receiving alms from the public during the morning hours.  They are not begging, please treat them with respect.
  • Do not pat anyone on the head, as it is considered a sacred part of the body.
  • Do not point the bottom of your feet directly at people, and do not touch anyone with the bottom of your feet.
